A toddler in Times Sqaure

Adventures & ParentingVeronica CassonComment

At the end of last month we had a crazy long multi-part trip. The first part was visiting family in New Jersey, followed by five days in New York and ending at Disneyland in California. Knowing all of the challenges involved both with family and having a preschooler at Disney I had assumed that the middle leg of the trip, visiting my old stomping ground of New York City, would be the easiest. I was totally wrong.

luke_v_stairs

Turns out living in New York, single and in your twenties, is wildly different than being in your thirties, on a budget and having a toddler. Huh.

The Challenges

Over-stimulation

The hardest part was that Luke was always immediately overwhelmed by the city. The noise, amount of energy, people and activity was too much for him. Part of this, no doubt, is that we were staying in Time Square one of the most lively and bustling places on earth.

Moments after stepping outside of the hotel Luke would curl into our legs and not move until we picked him up and carried him to our destination. He can sometimes be shy in large groups but generally he is a fairly outgoing kid with way too much energy so that fact that he refused to walk anywhere at all was surprising. And really hard on my back.

Dashed Expectations

His terror of the city as well as the physicality of carrying a three-year-old everywhere made it hard to do very much. Luke mostly wanted to stay in our Times Square facing hotel room and watch everything out the window.

IMG_2700.jpg

My biggest challenge was letting go of attending all of the events and locales of my youth and resigning myself to a trip spent mostly indoors with one or two excursions a day.

(Full disclosure, three days in we went ahead and bought an umbrella stroller as the effort of carrying him and our stuff everywhere became too taxing.)

Parks and and Playgrounds

One thing that was super cool about the slowed down pace was being able to see the city in a way I never was able to before. I honestly had been through Union Square, and Washington Square park a bajillion times but do not think I sat and really explored the parks the same way as before. They are gorgeous.

Libraries

luke_in_lib

New York City library interiors were also new to me. I had scoured every bookstore in the city when I was younger but would rarely enter the libraries (in retrospect I really should have as I made so little money then).  This trip, when Luke was feeling over stimulated, we would duck into one of the darkly lit temples of books and stone and read some Adele & Simon. We would probably use the bathroom and water fountain too.

Our favorite was the Jefferson Market Library  I used to walk by on my way to get a Cafe Au Lait and lox bagel at French Roast and think, "Hmmm that’s pretty."

Times Square Toy R’ US

Have you seen this thing? There is a Ferris wheel going through the center of the store. A ferris wheel! We mostly stopped in to get the aforementioned stroller. They had bins by the front door. I guess we were not the only ones who mistakenly thought they would not need a stroller in Manhattan.Aside from the ferris wheel, there are a bunch of play areas allowing children to interact with toys and many cool displays including an enormous Tyrannosaurus Rex. It has a roar so loud it shakes the nearby shelves (parent’s of easily frightened kids beware of floor three).

The American Museum of Natural History:

We were lucky enough to spend the last few days in the area with two of our closest friends and their young son that we could not wait to meet.   We all met near another close friend’s house in uptown that was just across the the NHM. So after burning energy at the playground for a little while we went.

You really cannot beat NYC’s Natural History Museum. It was one of my faves when I was young and still is. We were worried the kids would be too young, and while the two year old was not as interested, Luke was enamored with the exhibits. Their unparalleled dinosaur collection was the biggest hit. I suspect that is true for all ages. Luke still talks about the Wooly Mammoth, Triceratops and T-Rex.

If you are in new York on that day you should really go.

Restaurants

Nourish

No more waiting on long lines for our favorite eateries. The eaters I loved that hadn’t closed often had non-kid hours. So even though we did not get to Tea & Sympathy we discovered this awesome local cafe nearby called  Nourish.

The restaurant was small but open and sunny with jars of pickles and fresh ingredients on the wall. The friendly staff happily called back to one another as they cut and chopped local seasonal ingredients. The food was fresh and beautiful. We were able to sit at a bar along the kitchen and watch the chef cook. Luke loved that. We chatted up the cook while he worked and learned he and his wife had  moved to NYC from SF for him to cook and she to be a stylist.

It was still essential to visit one of our favorite bookstores in the world Stands. We just had to. We took turns reading to Luke in the kids section on the second floor while the other Mom would do some browsing in the stacks.

Le Midi

After leaving the store Luke was totally hungry and needed to crash soon (the time change issues never really went away). We found a french restaurant with no wait nearby that was super good (previously we would have walked over to St. Marks for drink's at Angel’s Share and dinner at Yokocho).

It was only around 5:30, early for city eating which meant our server was attentive and there was no wait. I love a restaurant experience that is transportive. The rich scarlet walls, French decoration and handcrafted cocktails bought me instantly back to our Paris Honeymoon. Except now there was a tiny human next to us begging to play Crossy Road <link> when he finished his entree.

The meal was great and I recommend it to anyone as a Union Square alternative.

Marriott Marquis Breakfast buffet

luke_ina_marriot

I usually skip the fancy hotel buffet due to the price (and I don’t usually dig the food at buffets) but Luke really wanted to go. I made a special event of the whole thing — letting him ride down the glass elevator in his PJ’s and pick anything from the many tables of food that he wanted.

The price was totally worth how hassle free and fun this was.

Luke picked fruit loops, chinese dumplings, and french toast for breakfast. As one does when they are three.

Denouement

We had nice times. We found cool things. It is always great to see old friends. It was challenging.

luke_julie_balcony

It did cure my, 'I kinda wish I still lived in NYC’ thing that has always been at the back of my mind. I think I may have changed but I think the city has changed too. It will always be great to visit though. And no matter what age I am New York will always have a piece of my heart. I’m so glad I get to share that with Luke.

*Luke is actually a pre-schooler but “toddler in Times Square” sound better. Alliteration, yo!

Oceanside Walks: September

Adventures & ParentingVeronica CassonComment
september_walks

It is the start of the new month, which means I have gathered all of the photos I collected from the previous month's morning walks and picked the best ten to share with you. I think this is the best one yet.

As the weather had warmed up a bit, Indian Summer is our actual summer in NorCal, we journeyed down onto the sand more mornings than we had previously. Come join us!

One of my favorite things Julie does on any trip is to sample as much of the regional food as you can. Yes, New Jersey is part of the USA as much as California but culturally I think they share only a common political body. Lifestyle and foods are so different between the two.

Jersey may have it’s share of issues, but it undoubtedly has great food and an absurd amount of diners. Having grown up there, I miss its unique culinary choices and be sure to revisit whenever I visit. Here’s the top shelf choices that make the list.

taylor_ham

Taylor Ham

Synonymous with New Jersey food stuff, and usually the first thing mentioned, is Taylor Ham. Created by John Taylor in 1856, Taylor Ham is a cylinder-shaped salted pork roll, which tastes similar but not the same as U.S. Canadian Bacon. It can be found in almost every restaurant in New Jersey (and almost nowhere else).

It is usually fried up, and served on a breakfast plate or in a sandwich. You can buy Taylor Ham online here

hard_roll

Hard Roll

Crips and shiny on the outside with a soft pillow texture on the in. New Jersey Hard Rolls are a local staple. Often eaten with only butter they resemble puffier kaiser rolls . I always liked mine best with poppy seeds.

Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese with S.P.K

If you want a fast breakfast in New Jersey is what you do. I think it is the most common morning meal in the state. S.P.K stands for Salt, Pepper & Ketchup. It’s how they do.

nj_hotdog

Hot Dogs All-The-Way

You would think this would mean a hot dog with everything on it but it is not. In fact All-the_way sauce is a particular kind of topping that is similar to a ground beef chili. Many hot dog shops in North Jersey exist entirely on the strength of their All-The-Way sauce. The very from place to place but the best have a smoky cajun flavor.

I found this recipe online if you would like to give it a go:

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 2 8oz cans tomato paste
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1 ½ tbsp chili powder
  • ¾ tbsp paprika
  • ¾ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic salt
  • ½ tsp celery seed
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground pepper
  • 6 oz Heinz ketchup
  • 2 tbsp spicy brown mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion and another 2 cups that do not go into the recipe.

The process is just as important as the ingredients, so please do not try to rush this.

1) Put all measured dry ingredients above into a small bowl and mix well, set aside.

2) Brown the ground beef while breaking it into the smallest pieces possible, drain most of the grease, leave a little.

3) Add tomato paste and water directly to the pan with the beef, medium heat, combine well.

4) Sprinkle all dry ingredients evenly into beef/tomato paste mixture while keeping a medium to low heat.

5) Add all other remaining ingredients to pan and stir/mix well. Remember, only 1 cup onion goes in.

6) Slow simmer for at least 1 hour, adding water as necessary so as not to dry out or burn.

Your final sauce should have enough consistency so it does not drip or get too runny, yet thin enough not to clump into a ball.

happy_wiatress

The Happy Waitress

There are an awful lot of diners, and while the temperament of the actual servers can vary from pleasant to hostile, they almost all serve  the happy waitress. It is an open-face grilled cheese  sandwich with bacon and tomato. Get it with a side of fries or it doesn’t count.

ice

Italian Ice

New Jersey Italian Ice is different then the crunchy chunks of flavored Sno Cone found  elsewhere. Somehow the ice always seems smoother and the flavor is more robust. The chain Rita’s is now the gold standard, though I still have fond memories of the small paper cups of the frozen treat that I would get from carts while spending the day on the beach.

nj_pizza

Jersey Pizza

So thin-crusted and dripping with butter and olive oil that it needs to be folded in half to be eaten. Jersey and New York both have the best pizza. Hands down. Be sure to get some the next time you are in trip-state area get a "pie." Also it is wierdly cheaper than the places that sell inferior slices.

The bagels are also spectacular as well but NY may just peak ahead of NJ so I did not add them on the list. I also love the way they serve Antipasti (pronounced Anti-past in Jersey). I did not get a sketch of that one but it was too pretty to not grab a photo of.

How to Fly with a Toddler

Adventures & ParentingVeronica Casson1 Comment

Have you flown with a child? It’s not the best thing ever.

Recently within two weeks we had three flights, two of them over five hours. On all of the journeys we managed to keep Luke fairly occupied and entertained and it was not so bad. Julie and I were both spent but he seemed to come away from the experience enjoying air travel. So it’s a win.

Luke and I excited to board the flight to NYC.

How to fly with a toddler:

Entertaining Luke inflight was mostly a series of pre-planned time delayed activities, gifts, apps, toys, and snacks. Nothing extravagant, just items that he would find interesting and occupy his mind while on board.

Julie &amp; Luke inflight.

Julie & Luke inflight.

Stuff we brought

New storybooks
We picked three golden books we knew he would enjoy and pulled one out when he started growing restless. Our current faves are the new Star Wars ones I mentioned in the last post.

All times faves are

Snacks

Granola bars, fruit pouches, cheese sticks, veggies sticks. About once every thirty minutes we would ask him if he was thirsty or wanted a snack.

We also made a really big deal about the food cart. He got to pick anything he wanted (except soft drinks which we don’t allow yet) and any snack. He chose chocolate milk and potato chips (which we split three ways). He really loved the pringles mini-can.

Apps

We loaded the iPad with new games tucked in hidden folders that we did not show him until mid way through the flights.

 Favorites included:

Endless Alphabet

endless_alphabet.
thinkrolls

Gifts/toys

The night before Luke got to pick out a toy from the book store he got to bring along on the plane (I distracted him with this activity while Julie purchased the Golden Books for the flight). He picked a set of Star Wars action figures and really like holding them and looking at them while on the plan. Particularly during take off and landing.

GUM

To help cut down on ear-popping and avoid Luke noticing how nervous I get during landing and possibly  taking that on himself, we let him chew his first piece of gum. He was totally in to it and was not really phased by the descent, other than enjoying watching the buildings and cars grow from tiny to big.

plane window

PROTIP: Bring your own car seat. Rental car dealers charge a lot for them.
You can check yours for free when picking up your boarding passes. It is a little bulky on the walk from the terminal to the rental but worth the savings.

Enjoy your next flight! Let me know any tips you have I might have missed.

10 links I am loving and a life refresh

Adventures & ParentingVeronica CassonComment
For what I am wearing.

For what I am wearing.

It’s September! and we are doing a life refresh. It's inspired partially by it being my birthday soon (I’ve always been one of those troublesome people that thinks birthdays are a big deal) and also because we went on that crazy three week trip (that I am already building groundbreaking blog posts about) and our lives got all thrown out of order.

This refresh is to get our lives back on track.

Things in our refresh include:

Budget

envelope.jpg

We have failed at doing a budget so many times. This month we are going hardcore and doing that thing where you put cash in envelopes. Each one containing the max amount you should spend in different categories for the week/month. Our 'eating out' envelope will be the most challenging. So much of our money goes to restaurants.

Diet

We did Paleo with mixed results earlier this summer and then moved into a Clean Diet, which I really liked. I say “clean" but it was much very the Jessica Alba/Honest company inspired eating plan so I should say Honest Diet, maybe.

Basically it is eating:

  • Nothing with more than five ingredients.

  • Mostly fruit or veggies (2/3rds of your plate should be produce).

  • Proteins are mostly lean meats or fish (red meat sparingly).

  • Limited dairy.

When we were on it earlier this summer I felt so good. My tummy behaved much better than normal. We totally slipped when traveling but are going to try to do that pretty strictly this month.

Full guidelines in her book.

Clothes

sept_loft_skirt

I plan on doing a capsule wardrobe for fall that I am slowly assembling.

However, Indian Summers are big here so I might go ahead and wait until the end of October to implement it. Either way, I know this skirt will be included in it as it is my current fave. (Protip: 40% off currently!

Ocean

septe_ocena_splash

We live by the frackin’ ocean and we utilize it far less than we should. The ocean! I bet you live by some cool stuff you don't do as often as you should too, right?

Our morning walk always passes by the sea, but we have gotten out of the habit of spending extra time there. This month I want to be sure to spend time on the sand or in the water during playdates and and in the evening for dinner picnics as well. Who knows how long we will really get to live here so I better be taking advantage of it.

How about you all? Are there amazing things near where you live that you too often skip over? I want to know what they are! Make this month the one you utilize them and let me know.

I've already started to increase my ocean time by stopping by the beach to walk Byron after dropping Luke off in the morning the three days he has preschool. As opposed to walking Byron around the grass lot next door as I had been doing. You know who loves beaches more than people? Dogs!

Stuff I am Loving This Month:

Kayley Melissa

Youtube_cover_Kayley

This YouTube channel. I solemnly swear to curl my hair more often because it looks so much better and Kelsey will help me do it.

Michael Kors nailpolish in Fantasy

nail polish

Look at this nail polish! I don’t even like blue very much and it’s one of my favorite polishes this year.  Well, month maybe– I change a lot.

Call Your Girlfriend

callyourgf

Call Your Girlfriend. The podcast for long distance besties everywhere. Ammintou Sou and Ann Friedman dish about pop culture, feminism, menstruation and their lives in general. It makes me miss my long distance bestie and i cannot get enough of it.

Smart Planet Lunchboxes

septemer_lunchbox

I want these little foldable bento-like lunch boxes. Part of spending less on going out to eat is making lunches at home when Luke and I have outings. How much nicer if the containers were divided and you could fold them up afterwards?

Vanity Fair, Special Edition: TansAmerica

trans_america_cover

If you told me when I was younger that Conde' Naste would put out a thick glossy magazine celebrating Transgender heroes past and present I would never have believed you.

While growing up being trans was always something to hide, both before and after transition. But look at this?  What a time to be alive.

Star Wars Golden Books

starwars_goldenbooks

These came out in August are so cute and fun to share with our little reader. Star Wars has a way of sparking the imagination. I love hearing the little stories he makes up afterwards involving the characters or ships.
